Customer Kitchen Design

I designed this kitchen a couple years ago for a good friend.

She called me and said her husband and son in law were tearing the tile out

in her kitchen and she wanted me to come over and give her some advice.

While I was looking at the kitchen,

just thinking I was going to give her some color options for paint and tile,

her husband came in and said the most beautiful words to a designers ears

“You can do whatever you want!”

NO WAY!

He gave me permission to move, plumbing, electrical, walls,

EVERYTHING!

To say the least

I. Was. In. Heaven!

Here is the entryway looking into the kitchen and a half bath (which we ended up tearing out).

(Sorry for the crappy pictures the were taken with an old camera)

So this is what the kitchen looked like before we started.

She actually had quite a bit of space, but it was not taken advantage of.

Keep in mind while looking at these pictures,

that this couple has 4 adult girl with spouses and about 15 grand kids!

She never had anyone over because she didn’t have enough room

and sadly embarrassed of her space.

That. Had. To. Change.

Looking into the kitchen from the Family Room

Dining area behind kitchen just off the entry, which used to be a bedroom.

You can see why she never had anyone over in this small dining space.

It was just too small!

Before they turned the old bedroom into the Dining Room, this was the dining space.

It was literally right in the walk way to get to the Family Room from their Master bedroom and the Entry.

I measured their whole space, went home and drew up a new kitchen plan, presented it, they loved it, and then the real work began!

About where the ladder is where the half bath once was.

She loved that half bath there, but the kitchen plan would not work with it.

SO we tore it out!

But luckily she has another one just down the hall 🙂

Seeing this is such a high for me!

I know most people get panicked seeing a space like this but,

I LOVE IT!!!

After finishing all the new plumbing, electrical, venting and moving the central vac

the drywall started to go back up!

img_2247

We didn’t tear out any sheet rock in the Family Room,

we just changed the lighting, paint, added trim around the windows (not seen in this picture),

new mantel, furniture, and of course new wood flooring.

Once everything was removed I had 22 feet of wall space on each side of the kitchen to work with!

You would never imagine that with what it looked like before.

The tight spaces were quite deceiving.

We were able to put in a 10 foot island!

The back splash is not in yet in these pictures, but everything looks so beautiful!

(we ended up doing a mosiac that ties the cabinets and counter-tops together.

Here’s the new kitchen!

She wanted to do something traditional.

We decided to go with lighter cabinets since there is not a ton of natural light in this space

and warmed it up with a beautiful walnut stained island.

Wouldn’t just love two dishwasher’s?

img_9045

We tore out the old built-in china hutch and desk and they really loved them,

so I decided to put them back in.

The wall of cabinets is all food storage.

She never had a pantry before and didn’t really have space to add a big walk-in one in,

so I thought she would love this storage space.

img_9046

There is slide out drawers so she can get to the back where things tend to be forgotten about.

I believe everything needs to have a place.

Our cabinet guy helped us come up with this spot for the broom!

We added in under cabinet lighting for a soft pretty glow at night.

The granite was really a beautiful mix of color that tied in the two different cabinet colors so well.

This was a huge project and took about 1 year to complete.

But it was so worth it!

I hoped you enjoyed it!

Later this week I will post her entry.

The wood work is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!
